Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to investigate the reflection of plane waves in a double-porosity (DP) thermoelastic medium.

Design/methodology/approach

To derive the theoretical formulas for elastic wave propagation velocities through the potential decomposition of wave-governing equations. The boundary conditions have been designed to incorporate the unique characteristics of the surface pores, whether they are open or sealed. This approach provides a more accurate and realistic mathematical interpretation of the situation that would be encountered in the field. The reflection coefficients are obtained through a linear system of equations, which is solved using the Gauss elimination method.

Findings

The solutions obtained from the governing equations reveal the presence of five inhomogeneous plane waves, consisting of four coupled longitudinal waves and a single transverse wave. The energy ratios of reflected waves are determined for both open and sealed pores on the stress-free, the thermally insulated surface of DP thermoelastic medium. In addition, the energy ratios are compared for the cases of a DP medium and a DP thermoelastic medium.

Originality/value

A numerical example is considered to investigate the effect of fluid type in inclusions, temperature and inhomogeneity on phase velocities and attenuation coefficients as a function of frequency. Finally, a sensitivity analysis is performed graphically to observe the effect of the various parameters on propagation characteristics, such as propagation/attenuation directions, phase shifts and energy ratios as a function of incident direction in double-porosity thermoelasticity medium.

Case overview/synopsis

This case study is about two first-generation entrepreneurs from India who started a new innovative service delivery platform, UrbanKare with a vision to organize the household maintenance services industry. The company was founded in 2016 with a seed capital support of the State Government. The idea behind this initiative was to provide customers a professional, reliable and convenient household repair and maintenance services at their fingertips. The biggest challenge they were facing was that of aggregation of service providers (skilled workforce) and maintaining the service quality in the context of B2B and B2C service provision.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to study the propagation of inhomogeneous waves in a partially saturated poro-thermoelastic media through the examples of the free surface of such media..

Design/methodology/approach

The mathematical model evolved by Zhou et al. (2019) is solved through the Helmholtz decomposition theorem. The propagation velocities of bulk waves in partially saturated poro-thermoelastic media are derived by using the potential functions. The phase velocities and attenuation coefficients are expressed in terms of inhomogeneity angle. Reflection characteristics (phase shift, loci of vertical slowness, amplitude, energy) of elastic waves are investigated at the stress-free thermally insulated boundary of a considered medium. The boundary can be permeable or impermeable. The incident wave is portrayed with both attenuation and propagation directions (i.e. inhomogeneous wave). Numerical computations are executed by using MATLAB.

Findings

In this medium, the permanence of five inhomogeneous waves is found. Incidence of the inhomogeneous wave at the thermally insulated stress-free surface results in five reflected inhomogeneous waves in a partially saturated poro-thermoelastic media. The reflection coefficients and splitting of incident energy are obtained as a function of propagation direction, inhomogeneity angle, wave frequency and numerous thermophysical features of the partially saturated poro-thermoelastic media. The energy of distinct waves (incident wave, reflected waves) accompanying interference energies between distinct pairs of waves have been exhibited in the form of an energy matrix.

Originality/value

The sensitivity of propagation characteristics (velocity, attenuation, phase shift, loci of vertical slowness, energy) to numerous aspects of the physical model is analyzed graphically through a particular numerical example. The balance of energy is substantiated by virtue of the interaction energies at the thermally insulated stress-free surface (opened/sealed pores) of unsaturated poro-thermoelastic media through the bulk waves energy shares and interaction energy.

Abstract

Purpose

This study investigates the enablers and challenges of digital supply chains (DSCs) adoption and develops a digital supply chain maturity (DSCM) model as a basis for developing guidelines for DSC adoption in the digital transformation journey.

Design/methodology/approach

The research involves a systematic literature review (SLR) of Industry 4.0 (I4) adoption in supply chain (SC) practices to identify key enablers and associated maturity levels. The literature search of published articles during the 1997–2020 period and subsequent screening resulted in 64 articles. A DSCM model was developed using the categorization of important enablers and associated levels transitioning from the traditional SC to the DSC ecosystem.

Findings

Four broader categories of DSC enablers and challenges were identified from the content analysis of SLR. Digital strategy alongside I4 technologies and human capital were prominent in DSC adoption as I4 technologies and human capital depend on other enablers such as dynamic capabilities (DCs). Lack of infrastructure and financial constraints to implementing I4 were significant challenges in the DSC adoption.

Research limitations/implications

The proposed DSCM model provides a holistic view of enablers and maturity levels from traditional SC to DSC adoption. However, the DSCM model needs to be empirically validated and streamlined further using inputs from practitioners.

Practical implications

The proposed DSCM model can be used as a framework to guide practitioners in assessing maturity and developing implementation plans for successful DSC adoption.

Originality/value

This research introduces a novel DSC maturity model through a holistic view of enablers and maturity levels from traditional SC to DSC adoption.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to investigate propagation characteristics of seismic waves at the welded interface of an elastic solid and unsaturated poro-thermoelastic solid.

Design/methodology/approach

A theoretical formulation of partially saturated poro-thermoelastic solid is used in this study established by Zhou et al. (2019). The incidence of two primary waves (P and SV) is taken. The incident wave from the elastic solid induces two reflected waves and five refracted waves. Due to viscous pore fluids, partially saturated poro-thermoelastic solid behave dissipative, whereas elastic solid behaves non-dissipative. As a result, both reflected and incident waves are homogeneous. However, all the refracted waves are inhomogeneous. A non-singular system of linear equations is formed by the coefficients of reflection and refraction for a specified incident wave. The energy shares of various reflected and refracted waves are determined by using these reflection and refraction factors. Finally, a sensitivity analysis is performed, and the effect of critical variables on energy partitioning at the interface is observed. The numerical example shows that throughout the process of reflection/refraction, the energy of incidence is conserved at all angles of incidences.

Findings

This study demonstrated two refracted (homogeneous) and five refracted (inhomogeneous) waves due to the incident wave from elastic solid. The reflection and refraction coefficients and partitioning of incident energy are acquired as a part of diverse physical parameters of the partially saturated poro-thermoelastic media. The interference energies between unlike pairs of refracted waves have been discovered due to the dissipative behavior of unsaturated poro-thermoelastic solid.

Originality/value

The sensitivity of different energy shares to various aspects of the considered model is graphically analyzed for a specific numerical model. The energy balance is maintained by combining interaction energy and bulk wave energy shares.

Abstract

An analysis of steady laminar mixed convection boundary layer flow along a vertical cone of constant wall temperature is presented. A mixed convection parameter ξ, as proposed by Lin and Chen, is used to serve as a controlling parameter that determines the relative importance of the forced and the free convection flows. New coordinates and dependent variables are then defined in terms of ξ, so that the transformed non‐similar boundary layer equations give computationally efficient numerical solutions which are valid over the entire range of mixed convection flow from the forced convection limit to the free convection limit for fluids of any Prandtl number. The effects of the mixed convection parameter ξ and the Prandtl number Pr on the velocity and temperature profiles as well as on the skin friction and heat transfer coefficients are shown for both cases of buoyancy assisting and buoyancy opposing flow conditions.

Abstract

Purpose

To explore annotated video-based portfolios and the communicative practices embedded in this technological mediation as a means for teacher candidates to construct pedagogical knowledge and develop self-examination skills leading to a deeper reflection on practice, greater perceived value of the reflection process, and the ability to identify specific behaviors for improvement.

In this chapter, we present the development of an online graduate practicum course in a Masters in Reading program, and the supportive measures put into place so students could reflect on their own and others’ practice within a video-based portfolio construction.

Findings

Observations indicate course members’ discussion regarding teaching follows a clear progression: the importance of teachers’ management of materials, space and time; developing their ability to discern patterns in student behavior; and a growing recognition of the impact teacher talk and habits have on their students. To support practicum students’ progress, we have developed a set of assumptions to guide talk about practice during annotation and discussion of video, as well as ways of using talk effectively during a video lesson.

Practical implications

We share this glimpse into the design of our practicum course as a means to make transparent the support systems developed so students could capture and discuss quality practice within the context of their own work with a student. We hope sharing our journey will provide others engaged in this work with a common language and lens for discussion about quality, resulting in positive outcomes for students.

Taxation is the largest area that needs to be explored as individuals make discrete stings while filing taxes. Since compliance-focussed systems for tax collection are missing, this department is facing difficulties in providing quality data. This chapter will cover blockchain operations in the tax system to streamline the entire process and highlight the challenges.

Need of the Study: As the growth of technology is in the boom stage, research should be carried out to create more awareness regarding its usage and its possible threats. This study will spark more light on taxation by taking blockchain as the torch to improvise the vision.

Abstract

Purpose

The authors have attempted to understand how big data and predictive analytics (BDPA) can help retain employees in the organization.

Design/methodology/approach

This study is grounded in the positivism philosophy. The authors have used a resource-based view (RBV) to develop their research hypotheses. The authors tested their research hypotheses using primary data gathered using a single-informant questionnaire. The authors obtained 254 usable responses. The authors performed the assumptions test, performed confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) to test the validity of the proposed theoretical model, and further tested their research hypotheses using hierarchical regression analysis.

Findings

The statistical result suggests that the various human resource management strategies play a significant role in improving retention under the mediating effect of the BDPA.

Research limitations/implications

The authors have grounded their study in the positivism philosophy. Moreover, the authors tested their hypotheses using single-informant cross-sectional data. Hence, the authors cannot ignore the effects of the common method bias on their research findings. Moreover, the research findings are based on a particular setting. Thus, the authors caution the readers that their findings must be examined in the light of their study limitations.

Practical implications

The study provided empirical findings based on survey data. Hence, the authors provide numerous guidelines to the practitioners that how the organization can invest in creating BDPA that helps analyze complex data to extract meaningful and relevant information. This information related to employee turnaround may guide top management to reduce the dissatisfaction level among the employees working in high-stress environments resulting from a high degree of uncertainty.

Social implications

The study helps understand the complex factors that affect the morale of the employee. In the high-paced environment, the employees are often exposed to various negative forces that affect their morale which further affect their productivity. Due to lack of awareness and adequate information, most of the employees and their issues are not dealt with effectively and efficiently by their line managers. Thus, the BDPA can help tackle the most complex problem of society in a significant way.

Originality/value

This study offers some useful contributions to the literature which attempts to unfold the complex nexus between human resource management, information management and strategy. The study contributes to the BDPA literature and how it helps in the retention of employees is one of the areas which still remains elusive to the academic community. Moreover, the managers are still skeptical about the application of BDPA in understanding human-related issues due to a lack of understanding of how and to what extent the employee-related information can be stored and processed. This study’s findings further open the new avenues of research that need to be tackled.
